The term or phrase the “Browning of America” can be taken two different ways. A progressive thinker, one very intertwined with the ideas of diversity would agree that this mixture of cultures and ideologies is a good thing. In contrast, a traditionalist would say this mixing of cultures and demographics is net negative for the country and has made the United States an unrecognizable land. This phrase is extremely controversial as it garners many different reactions. The Browning of America refers to the demographic shift that many Americans believe that they can see and feel happening. The population of non-whites in America is growing, and the country has become more racially diverse than ever. With broader immigration trends, declining birth rates for Americans and the increase of racial diversification, many conservatives/traditionalists fear this shift towards a Majority-Minority culture. Many scholars believe that by the year 2040, White Americans will no longer be the majority race. This has sparked fear into conservative followers who express serious concern for what the implications will be for America socially, politically and culturally. Consciously or maybe even subconsciously conservatives and White nationalists fear this “Browning” and becoming the minority because deep down they know American History. They aren’t stupid. They know what the history and treatment of minorities looks like in this country. And guilt is tearing them apart so bad that if non-whites ever had control, they must tell themselves that the same monstrosities and chaos their ancestors created, will be placed on them. White anxiety has been the result of this Browning of America phenomenon. The Majority-minority fallacy has unleashed a wave of conservative media stars and politicians who would rather put racial and social justice for others on the backburner, while simultaneously making the claim that their race is under attack. This is also known as the Great replacement theory. This theory simply states that all non-whites are in concert and in a plot in order to diminish the influence and power of White people through immigration and invasion.
Now that this theory has made its way through the country and started to catch some attention. You can see many conservatives catching onto it. Alt-right winged Christian nationalists specifically carry this ideology the heaviest, but it has seeped into other areas of conservatism and even liberalism. Nick Fuentes, alt right media star went on the PBD podcast and claims that him leaving his white suburban area of Chicago and going to Boston University for college where it is much more diverse, radicalized him to the right. He claims that a mixed and diverse culture is NOT the America that he recognized. But one that he is seeing being taken over by people who don’t look like him or talk like him. It is much deeper than just being replaced population wise. This idea of whites being replaces can be seen at the college/education realm (ending affirmative action and race-based quotas) and in the workplace (ending DEI) and in entertainment. The Charlie kirks of the world will go on a podcast and say that Black people are unfairly taking “White” jobs and that White people need to “fight back” …. whatever that means. White Americans own and control 99.9% of the resources in America, so you tell me Charlie, who’s taking what from who? White nationalists and racists can’t even fathom the idea of not dominating and owning everything. Just imagine what America would look like if that number was even 75% and not 99.9%. But people like Charlie and his turning point USA followers need a reason to hate. They need something to cling to, or they are worthless. They don’t unite people; they live to divide them. And that is exactly what the great replacement theory is. A Divisive and dangerous ideology that has now called for White nationalist groups to become militant and “load up” just in case. Remember Donald Trump told the proud boys “Stand back and stand by”. That was a clear statement to them that he is on their side. He just can’t publicly adhere to them because he KNOWS they are divisive and not a net positive for the country overall. These same white nationalist groups have always been around. The proud boys, neo nazis of today are no different than the Ku Klux Klan and the Lily-white movement of conservatives from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Their goal is to protect “whiteness” and to destroy anything in its path that threatens that or doesn’t resemble that.
The backlash to the Browning of America has caused many white nationalists to rally. We now see White people at public rallies around the country chanting “fight back white people.” As if Whites in the country are under some direct and formulated attack. Its superficial. Whites uphold the status quo in America. This thinking and influence of conservative leadership telling its followers that people who are less than deserving of being citizens are taking “what’s theirs” is nasty, dangerous and a complete lie. Instead of sharing this great nation, they would rather see it perish than all of us live in some sort of harmony. What I find hilariously ironic is that most Whites in America are direct descendants of European settlers. Most haven’t been in America for more than 4-5 generations. They can directly identify with another heritage or culture that’s not American….This is why immigration from Europe specifically is never an issue, it’s never brought up in Media. It’s only a media pushed issue when its Black or Brown people. Remember Trump said about Haitian immigrants “THEY ARE EATING THE DOGS AND CATS.” As a Black American, personally I feel that we are the True Americans. No shade to anyone else but I cannot trace my lineage and heritage to another country. My mom, her mom and her mother before that etc. All identified as American. Labeled a Black one specifically. We have no lineage to Africa or Europe. All that was stolen. So, because of that I feel like I have a claim to this land more than someone like an Erika Kirk who is the grandchild of Immigrants but is a Staunchly conservative figure who pushes the great replacement theory. I just find it funny that the grandchildren of Immigrants have the audacity to try and regulate and tell others what culture is. The Vast majority of Americans are immigrants or descendants of one. Remember, America is only a few hundred years old and began as a settler colony. The idea that someone regulates this land more than the other is silly and divisive. The powers that be know that.
Whether people like it and want to accept it or not. The Constitution protects immigration. Immigrants are protected with constitutional rights and equal protection under the 14th amendment. Not only does this amendment protect immigrants, but it also protects Black Americans. This amendment keeps integrity of the family, the right against unreasonable searches and protects people from being deprived of life, liberty and property. The constitution is an interesting very complex document that is basically the reasoning for the cultural phenomenon’s we deal with now where the majority population dominates the minority. But it will also be the only way that people can be protected from domination from the majority culture, through legislation. The founding fathers wrote the constitution for all WHITE men to be equal, not all men. As time has went on people reference the constitution for Good and bad. For example, the constitution once justified racism and slavery. The “three fifths compromise” counted enslaved people as 3/5 of a human being for voting purposes and protected the slave trade. While the concept of race doesn’t exist in the constitution, it doesn’t take a scholar to realize they were talking about enslaved Blacks. Eventually the 14th amendment was added to promote equal rights and combat racial discrimination from the majority population.
The Battle for America shouldn’t be about race. If Americans were serious about making this a better place economically, spiritually and culturally then there would be a revolution around class warfare. Not pointing the finger and blaming someone because they look different than you. The fearmongers of the world MAKE RACE AN ISSUE. America was created as a race-based society. Until we move on from race-based principles and rivalries, corporations and companies will continue to dominate us in a financial monopoly while we are stuck fighting culture wars. The sad thing is, many establishment republicans and democrats want this and need these culture wars in order to maintain their political and economic power…Divide and conquer. Speaker of the house Mike Johnson said that America is white Christian nation, although numbers wise America is dominated by them. The tide is changing, and they can feel it and will do anything to protect the whiteness and Christian values in society. Both parties are grappling with this changing of the nation. On one hand republicans at large, are trying to make America less brown. They use rhetoric saying that Immigrants who are destined to commit crimes and atrocities will come over to America and vote blue because the democrats are a failing branch of politics who adheres to debauchery and filth. And because of the nature of the immigrants, they vote for the Democrats to stay in America. Republicans are selling a dream to its followers that does not exist. America has always been empowered by non-whites. Because of that messaging by Republicans ironically, Democrats especially in the most recent election haven’t done as well with non-whites as they normally do. Non-white immigrants for the most part especially the Asians and Hispanics want to have that “proximity to white-ness.” They are also known as “probationary whites”. Alot of them are not discouraged by the rhetoric of the right because they assume their proximity to whiteness or yearning to be allows them to be safe. So, the same nonwhite immigrants’ republicans swore would vote Democrat, actually ended up voting for Republicans more than ever in the 2024 election. The Democrats have a larger umbrella of constituents compared to the republicans culturally and socially. Because of that, many of those probationary whites do not see reasoning to support Democrats socially because they want to be in Kahoots with the white conservatives who are the “keepers of the culture.” Black and White are not races, they are statuses.
